I make pottery that is painted in careful detail, often playfully or with humor. I take delight in focusing on simple elements found in nature, frequently depicting subjects that are not highly regarded or are easily overlooked. Most of my recent work has been in black and white. The images on my pots, a wavy oak leaf, a patterned, toothy insect, an elegant letter, initially appear primitive. What begins to come through, as one pays attention, are layers of meaning and symbolism contained within the patterns and images. A mysterious inner world is mirrored back - and I create in order to communicate that mystery to others. Some of my colorful work, called BioGraphic Pottery, is commissioned by individuals to honor their life story.
