For me, pots are about balance. At their heart, they are simple and direct and difficult to achieve. Volume, contour, color, texture, feel, energy, surface, line .... all come into play in this humble format that gets set in the dishwasher and stacked in the cupboard. I so enjoy imagining the relationship of those aspects, while wandering around amidst all the obstacles and limitations that objects meant for use present.
I have been a potter in the mountains of Virginia since 1977. I make pots for the table, cooking, and serving. I hope that they bring a measure of delight to moments that might pass unoticed..an afternoon cup of tea..a quick lunch. I make them every day , steadfastly. It is a pleasure and a job, an effort and a reward which offers me a creative and fulfilling life. My pots have been described as structured, organic, earthy, architectural. I sell them in galleries and exhibitions around the country but also from my studio whenever people drop by the gallery space we have set up. I, along with my husband and friends, created the 16 hands studio tour that happens twice yearly in Floyd, Va.
